ServSafe is a nationally recognized food and beverage safety training and certificate program administered by the National Restaurant Association. It educates food service workers on safe food handling, sanitation, and hygiene to prevent foodborne illnesses and comply with local health regulations.
The program features four main types of certifications, each suited for different industry roles: [
ServSafe Food Handler: Covers the basic food safety principles required for everyday kitchen and waitstaff (e.g., personal hygiene, avoiding cross-contamination).
  • ServSafe Food Manager: A more advanced certification required by many health departments for restaurant owners, chefs, and management positions. It tests on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) regulations, temperature control, and facility sanitation.
  • ServSafe Alcohol: Trains bartenders, servers, and managers on responsible alcohol service, recognizing intoxication, and checking IDs.
  • ServSafe Allergen: Teaches staff how to identify food allergens and prevent cross-contact when preparing meals for customers with dietary restrictions. [

Employers frequently require a ServSafe certification as a prerequisite for hiring or to maintain compliance with state and local health codes.
